“We didn’t all come over on the same ship, but we’re all in the same boat now.” -Bernard Baruch

This quote is going to segway us into a mini-series of different proverbs from different nationalities during the month of April. I think that this quote is particularly relevant in today’s time, as the divides between the ships we sailed in and the ports we sailed from are becoming more important than the boat we are in now. To draw from another quote, “Life can only be understood backwards, yet it can only be lived forwards.” What we can do is learn about these other ships and the lessons and cultures they bring with them. To make these ships of the past a physical divider is to deter from living forwards. If we’re all in the same boat now, why do we still act like we’re still in separate ships? The time now is not for division, but for union, and we are all united in the boat we’re living in.
