“Fall down seven times. Stand up eight.” -Japanese Proverb

From Japan comes this week’s quote about perseverance. There is a saying by Benjamin Franklin which states “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” I would argue, however, that humanity’s guarantee to fail is more inherit than their ability to pay taxes. We don’t like to fail- if we did, we wouldn’t find any urge to improve our essence. Rather, failure is an a necessary component which we can use to improve our well being. We learn from our mistakes and seek to try harder. In this manner, if you continue to improve yourself, it won’t matter how many times you fail, just as long as you continue to stand up to try again. When you fall, you will find yourself filled with doubt and despair. It is at these times in which you must simply have faith and stand up again- not because your situation is any different or because it’s going to be better, but because you are better, and when it’s all over, you will find yourself better off than you were before- not because you fell down seven times, but because you stood up eight.
