The whole month of February, the African American Advisory at Wheaton Warrenville South High School is helping students of all ethnicities celebrate Black History Month. Set up by the Advisory are activities spread throughout the month to help all students and staff members celebrate the African American culture.

The African American Advisory has been meeting for the past couple of months to brainstorm ideas of how to include and engage students in celebrating. “Every month we have a meeting and talk about all the stuff that’s going to be happening during black history month and how we’re trying to spread the spirit around the school,” said Fasika Hailu, Wheaton Warrenville South Student and member of the African American Advisory.  With a mix of cultures and ethnicities throughout South, staff and students have made sure celebrating the population of South’s African American students has been a priority. “We’re doing activities such as a dodgeball game, having speakers come in and selling shirts. Students can also come to a movie night we’re having,” she said. The Dodgeball games will be held during the students lunches and they’re all welcome to participate. The “Black History Month” shirts were sold for $15 Feb. 10-Feb. 14.

The whole month of February is directed toward remembering important events and people that helped shape the African American culture throughout history. “I feel so happy to be an African American woman getting a great education,” Hailu stated. “This month is the celebration of the black women and men who have changed our world, they are so amazing,” she said.
