The Wheaton Warrenville South Varsity Boys’ soccer team won their season opener against Glenbard West 2-0 at Red Grange Field on Tuesday, Aug. 23.

The Tigers started slowly, as Glenbard West controlled possession in the first ten minutes of the game. Then, Wheaton Warrenville South responded by generating chances. The home side nearly scored in the fourteenth minute; however, the ball was cleared off the line by the Hilltoppers. The momentum then slid back to West, who forced a great save from goalkeeper Jared Ferreyra on a header generated by a free kick.

After that, the game completely changed. Semin Razman scored for the Tigers with a spectacular free kick in the twenty-ninth minute, and Marco González headed the ball into the back of the net in the thirty-ninth minute. These two goals gave South breathing room to operate comfortably in the match and dictate the pace of the game. West never recovered.

Throughout the second half, the Tigers stayed solid. This was especially true on defense, where center backs Nikhil Bawa and Tim Foley formed a defensive wall that attackers couldn’t get past. Midfielder Chase Kedzior wreaked havoc on defenders with his downfield runs. The Tigers maintained their lead to secure the victory.

Set pieces were fundamental in the Tigers’ success, most notably in the first goal of the contest. “Well, apparently 75 percent of goals are scored on set pieces, directly or indirectly, and this was direct,” said Head Coach Guy Callipari. “A lot of credit to our freshman (Semin Razman), who stood up there with poise, put the game on his shoulders a little bit, and found the back of the net.”

This win is an excellent start to the season for South. “You look at the season and we’ve got a stretch of around six games in ten days to get off on the right foot,” Coach Callipari noted. “With a two-nothing victory today, it speaks volumes about the effort that they put in.”
