The Wheaton Warrenville South Varsity Boys’ soccer team lost to St. Charles East 2-1 at Red Grange Field on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The Tigers faced a strong team, the St. Charles Fighting Saints, and gave it their all. St. Charles East went into the contest with a 9-2-1 record, while South had a 3-4-3 record. WWS wasn’t afraid of the DuKane Conference leaders and started the game with intensity.

“Well, knowing St. Charles East is always a good opponent, it’s good to know that you’re gonna have someone good to play against,” said midfielder Jack Beres. “So we were really trying to work hard and flip the bracket like our coach says.”

The Tigers maintained possession with short passes and attacked plenty on the left wing. Midfielder Chase Kedzior and forward Issa Husseini threatened the Saints’ goal; however, they did not have clear chances. The Tigers’ defense struggled during the first half. St. Charles East’s first goal was a product of inattentive defending from the Tigers. Mason Brockmeyer’s cross entered the small box and the Tigers weren’t able to clear it. Max Dodrill ended the play with a simple finish and the Saints took the lead. “They moved the ball well with their midfielders,” indicated center back Nikhil Bawa. “They didn’t force the ball through, they’d swing it back through and take a shot from outside the box.”

The Saint’s second goal came at the beginning of the second half. Marcus Walker executed a spectacular free kick that doubled the visitor’s advantage. Nevertheless, South didn’t give up. The home team went looking for a goal. Defender Brooks Becker scored a great goal on a deflected corner kick to revive the Tigers. After that, near the end of the game, head coach Guy Callipari tried to look for the equalizer with a 4-2-4 formation instead of South’s usual 4-3-3. Unfortunately, the Tigers weren’t able to tie the match. “We were having success with getting the ball played into Issa’s feet or he could flick on and having Gael come underneath him and support those opportunities,” coach Callipari noted. “I didn’t think we went there enough, but overall we gave ourselves a chance because we did have a couple looks.”
