In the bustling hallways of America’s high schools, amidst the daily symphony of lockers slamming and students chattering, a week filled with tradition tells a story of pride, creativity, and comradery. Homecoming week at Wheaton Warrenville South High School started the morning of Monday, Sept. 18 when students strolled the candy-adorned hallways. The theme for this year’s HOCO was our take on “Candy Land” which we called “Tiger Land”.
Students were welcome to volunteer their time to help set up decorations in the hallway the Sunday before their big week started. Decorations spanned from streamers to lifes-ize lollipops made out of pool noodles. Those in the student council created some of the decorations. Their effort and consideration to the theme was greatly appreciated. Each hallway at South was packed to the brim with brightly colored decor, which looked good enough to eat. It was definitely not ignored by the student body once HOCO week started. The dress-up days for HOCO week certainly did not disappoint. Staying true to the overall theme of “Candy Land” the dress-up days were, Sweet Dreams (Pajama Day), Barbie Land (Barbie vs. Ken), Left & Right Twix (Twin Day), and Tiger Land (Tiger Spirit). WWS students put their all into their outfits throughout the week. A recent study by The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) found that 73 percent of high school students consider HOCO posters and decorations as a significant part of their overall high school experience. This figure underscores the importance of this tradition, which extends beyond the football field to the very heart of the school community and cultural spirit filled the halls with each themed dress-up day and after-school events
The Tigers represented South well at the game against St. Charles North. Team spirit ran high as we took a lead in the first half by a wide margin. The dance team and marching band gave energetic performances throughout the game. Tiger spirit was in the air! However, during the second half of the game, the Tigers lost their lead in the fourth quarter as St. Charles North managed to tie up the game with three touchdowns. Sadly, during overtime, St. Charles North just managed to eke out a win against South. Still, the Tigers walked away with their heads held high for next week’s game and the possibility of playoffs.
Losing the HOCO game did not crush our school spirit. When it came to the dance, Wheaton Warrenville South dressed to impress. School pride was built all week. Between the themed dress-up days, after-school events, and the HOCO assembly, Tiger Nation was ready for the dance floor by Saturday, Sept. 22.
The HOCO dance was held in the Orange and Black gym. Huge masses of students crowded the DJ and danced their hearts away. Nothing short of a good night, many students were given the opportunity to sing into a microphone during songs. Our community surely does an exemplary job of making HOCO week an unforgettable experience for everyone!
