On Thursday, Aug. 29 the Wheaton Warrenville South varsity soccer team opened up their season season vs Oswego High School at Oswego. The Tigers dominated most of the game and were winning 3-1, that was until the last two minutes of the game.
After the canceled game on Tuesday, Aug. 27 vs Glenbard West, the Tigers were eager to open up their season. The same goes for Oswego who also had their game canceled. Both teams were eager to play and it showed by the intensity and balance between the two teams. That was until Oswego had a freekick right outside the 18, the initial shot by Oswego was blocked by senior captain Jared Ferreyra, but Oswego was quick to get the rebound and it went past Ferreyra giving Oswego the lead 1-0. The Tigers were quick to respond when senior captain Jet Oehrlein won the ball and played a pass through junior Semin Razman. Razman chips the Oswego keeper tying the score 1-1. The rest of the half was back and forth between the two teams.
Start of the second half the Tigers pressed and like the first goal, Oehrelin intercepted the ball and played Razman who shot it to the top corner giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead against the Panthers. The Tigers were now in control and kept on pressuring the Panthers which led to the third goal for the Tigers when the Panthers made a defensive error and senior Aaron Escareno anticipated and stole the ball and had an open note giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead over the Panthers.
Surely the Tigers secured their first win of the season, that was until Oswego had a freekick in a dangerous area right outside the box, similarly to the first goal, Ferreyra had a touch on it but the Panthers quickly reacted and scored from the rebound.
With a minute to go the Panthers were eager to tie up the game and they did when the Panther defense played a ball over the Tigers’ defense the Panthers were through on goal until Ferreyra came outside his goal and tried clearing the ball away but tackled the Oswego striker causing Ferreyra to receive a red card and was suspended from this game and against Schaumburg on Saturday, Aug. 31.
The Panthers had an amazing freekick opportunity right outside the box but this time it was scored directly past Junior keeper Daniel Karajic and Wheaton Warrenville Souths wall. The Panthers, full of adrenaline rush to the corner and celebrate while the Tigers in shock that they gave up a 3-1 lead with two minutes to go.
