Opening on Thursday, Nov. 7, the Wheaton Warrenville South Theatre Department brings the wizarding world of a certain magical orphan to life on stage. This fall, the Tiger thespians are performing the play “Puffs” by Matt Cox.
The melodramatic exploits of “The Boy Who Lived” take a backseat to the misadventures of Wayne Hopkins, a similarly orphaned yet entirely less heroic geek. Joining him are his friends Oliver Rivers, a math prodigy turned magical newbie, and Meagan Jones, a rebellious witch striving to follow the path of her evil mother. All three students find themselves in the Puffs, a house of loyal yet mostly incompetent wizards with an affinity for badgers. In full, viewers can expect to see close to 50 unique characters played by two talented casts of 11.
“When we were picking shows, we knew that we had a lot of good comedic actors in our program, so I wanted to do a comedy so we could highlight some of their aspects,” shared Nathan Villa, the tech director. “Also, I just love the show. I think it’s really fun…it has a lot of heart.”
Wheaton Warrenville South’s actors have been busy familiarizing themselves with their roles. “I do play 8 different characters, but…[my] most memorable character would probably be Professor McGonagall,” shares veteran performer, 17-year-old Ellie Hay. “And I do, in fact, have to do the Scottish accent.”
Those interested can purchase tickets for $10 on South’s On the Stage Website, and students can see the show for free at certain times. For those with a more musical leaning, Tiger Theatre will perform “Mean Girls” this spring.
