Wheaton Warrenville South High School recently performed their children’s show, “Seussical Jr”, on Friday, Sept. 20 in front of local third grade classes in our auditorium. They also presented their performance on Saturday, Sept. 21 with two shows throughout the day. This play presented itself as an opportunity for students to participate in our school’s theater program for a chance to be in their first production at Wheaton Warrenville South. These hard working students have committed themselves to four weeks of rehearsals in preparation for their three performances in front of an audience. “The experience was amazing, and I got the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and learn new aspects of theater production I never got to see before,” said Ellie Hay, one of the student directors of “Seussical Jr”.
The process may have been short, but I made so many new friends along the way, and we put on a great show.”
Our children show “Seussical Jr” triumphed in the end due to more than 40 people being involved in the show. The people who participated were the cast, tech crew, student directors, directors, costume people, student choreographers, and the upperclassmen cast mentors. The tech crew mostly helped out with sound, lights, mics and changed sets throughout the scenes of the show. Student directors assisted the director by helping with blocking certain scenes, and running a rehearsal, and they also helped out with the feedback to the actors at the end of the rehearsals. The upperclassmen mentors helped the cast with warm-ups at the beginning of rehearsals and or the performances. They also gave them notes to improve during the run-throughs leading up to the show dates.
The opening night was performed in front of Wiesbrook, Madison, and other elementary schools in the community. The kids had a blast while watching the show, and seemed to be leaping with joy as they left the auditorium at South. This year’s children’s show certainly lived up to the whimsical expectations of Dr. Seuss himself. “Seussical Jr.” will go down in the books as the highlight of the pre fall season.
