A game that is long-awaited throughout the entire season, the Crosstown Classic. No matter the year or sport, it always seems to be a rivalry that strengthens competitiveness and drive in the players. The scoreboard reflects this in the most recent basketball matchup: Wheaton Warrenville South vs. Wheaton North.
On Friday, Dec. 6, head coach boys’ basketball coach Mike Healy led the Wheaton Warrenville South boys basketball team to a 56-54 victory over the Wheaton North Falcons after trailing by 10 points in the second half. This year’s varsity team has had a great season with a (16-9) record, beating highly ranked teams. The team consists of younger talent and returning seniors, with starters David Showman, Zach Rogers, Brady McClatchy, AJ Rogers, and Jay Weber. The Tigers knew this game was not going to be easy, considering they only beat the Falcons by one point back in December 2025.
The boys started strong in the first quarter, knocking down three-pointers and finishing layups. They soon went downhill and entered halftime trailing by eight points. The Falcons felt confident and came out of halftime with even more energy. The game felt sealed for the Falcons when leading by 10 points and dominating the third quarter, but the Tigers responded fiercely. Showman and Rogers (AJ) stepped up big time for the Tigers and combined for 22 points just in the fourth quarter. Showman hit a corner three-pointer, changing the game, followed by Rogers adding three more points to tie the game with 1:32 remaining.
Showman sealed the win by knocking down free throws in the last 16.2 seconds of the game. “We showed a lot of heart,” said Healy. “David and AJ were big in the end, and Brody was huge for us. We had foul trouble, but played better in the second half. It was a great effort.”
The Tigers are not done yet. They are entering the playoff season ranking first in the DuKane Conference.
